The Deir al-Balah Governorate — also referred to as the Central Governorate — occupies the middle section of the Gaza Strip, covering approximately 56 square kilometers. Before October 7, 2023, the governorate was home to approximately 310,000 people. Its principal urban center is the city of Deir al-Balah, with az-Zawayda among its other localities. The governorate also contains four UNRWA refugee camps — Nuseirat, Bureij, Maghazi, and Deir al-Balah camp — which together housed an estimated 190,000 registered refugees before the war.
Sentinel-Bird tracks the Central Governorate continuously as part of its monitoring of the Gaza Strip, with imagery dating to before October 7, 2023 freely available for download.
