Gaza City Governorate occupies the north-central portion of the Gaza Strip and covers approximately 70 square kilometers. Before October 7, 2023, it was home to approximately 754,000 people β€” the most populous of the Strip’s five governorates. The city of Gaza, the Strip’s capital and largest urban center, anchors the governorate, alongside neighborhoods including Rimal, Shujaiyya, Zeitoun, and Tel al-Hawa. Al-Shifa Hospital, the largest medical facility in the Gaza Strip, is located in the Rimal neighborhood. The governorate also includes a small Mediterranean port on its western edge.
